This is definitely an area of interest for me. I'm looking for something with short files, at least at first, and of course, one or more stable sites I could work on, so I'm not wasting my time. I don't have any special equipment, other than a headset, and don't have new technology, so I'm probably knocked out of working on a lot of sites due to that. I do recall looking at one site before, and it required dual monitors, which is probably not going to happen, unless I get a new computer and keep this one, but unless a site pays well and provides consistent opportunities, I'm not going to be willing to put forth a lot of money to meet extra requirements, such as a specialized headset or foot pedal.

I just signed up for Rev but haven't heard back yet. I'm a little worried though because when I read the reviews before I applied, people's comments were all over the map! Some people say they can make $30-50 for a couple hours of work a day, and others say even after a long learning period they are only making around $2 an hour.

So hard to know what sites are actually decent until you've spent a fair bit of time with them, it's frustrating!

I have always wanted to do transcription, but it seems I always have a lot of trouble understanding what people say. Is there a knack to doing this so that it does not take hours to complete one job?

Well I've started with Rev doing transcription, and it's actually going pretty well. Not making a ton of money yet but almost minimum wage and I am getting a little bit faster. It can be hard to understand what people are saying, so I slow down or speed up the audio and listen a few  times to get the tricky phrases.

I wonder if there are higher paying places to try after I get the knack of it though? I understand medical and legal transcription can pay quite well, but I'm not sure how you get involved in that?

if you look online for transcription services or jobs there will be a few offering work. the problem is that they are so time consuming and the money you receive is not that much at the end of it all. Transcribe me never has work available but you can take a look at upwork for transcription jobs posted by clients

Thank you...this is great information for beginners. I am on MTurk but I have not tried any transcribing jobs there. I just recently got a foot pedal and a headset and right now I am looking for some non-medical practice files to download onto ExpressScribe to get my speed up. Is there something better than ExpressScribe to use for transcription?

I have never tried transcription work, offline or online. However, I hear that there is money to he made. While offline transcription job requires you to go to office and work in 24 hours shift, I have never considered joining offline transcription companies. However, I am thinki9ng to try online transcription job.

Thanks for sharing, @flonyas. I don't think I've heard of this one before, and it sounds like something that would work for me. I'm a newbie and my speed is not all that. I just don't  site that's too precious about it, maybe until I have some confidence. I started doing some transcription work offline and I notice a huge improvement from when I first started. I know it's not quite the same, but I hope the experience will stand me in good stead for online transcription :) I'll have a look at the site.

Does anyone know about the testing on TranscribeMe? How many times can you take the test? It's pretty strict, 100% is required. If you don't pass can you take it again, and how many times can you take it? I got one question wrong and now I seem just stuck there. Are there other chances to pass the test?

How fast do you need to type to effectively transcribe? I would not consider myself an avid typist, but I'm not horrible, and I do find it intriguing.  $1 for every six minutes of audio sounds fantastic.  I just went out on my own for work, I import products for resale and this requires a lot of time on the computer.   Between emails and Skype I am usually just dicking around looking at sale numbers or something,  this could be something to fill the time that actually makes money.

I have been checking TranscribeMe, but I haven't decided to join in just yet.  I may check out other sites though.  However, the truth is, I am quite reluctant to be a transcriptionist.  I can type fast, and I have been listening rather to the audio in movies instead of simply just watching them.  I'm still uncertain on whether I should try being a transcriptionist, though I have heard that you can earn quite a lot.  My mother, who has just lost her job, is trying to lead me to being a transcriptionist.
