Creating a websites is the easiest way to promote a new business.  However, the cost to hire someone to make one is high.  So, I have tried using different companies that offer free websites.

The best free website to me is You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login.  What they offer are sleek, modern webpages at no cost.  They are easy to manipulate even by a novice.   Other places offering free websites tend to be 'cartoonish' in comparison or just plain bland.

I've used Wix before and I think it's great.  The only thing is as a customer, I don't really like buying from a free generated website.  It all depends, though.  If it's a marketplace website, I'm okay with it because it's a marketplace and I know they do it because the target customer will probably visit that marketplace and the host does it's own advertising and whatnot.  But, when it's a single business doing all of the marketing, I don't know. I guess for me, building a website is part of a business' start-up costs and it doesn't really give me confidence about the business' seriousness when they have a free site.  Even if the website has all these flash elements and it looks AMAZING, if a new business can't buy or make their own webpage then I would prefer them having a simple blog (under their name as the address not a subdomain).  In the blog itself they can include their store.  I feel the same about Facebook pages.  Having more than a Facebook page to buy from shows the store's seriousness and professionalism.  Again, this is my opinion.

I've also looked at Wix, and found that while they do have really nice templates that are easy to use, I did want to have my own domain name as it looks a lot more professional and also because I don't want some other company controlling my website platform. Wix does have upgraded options where you use a domain name of your choice, but they retain control of your domain and hosting, which I find risky - what if they go out of business or get taken over? Also, they post their ads on your site unless you take one of the more expensive upgrade packages.

Other free builders such as Weebly let you use your own domain as an alternative to a subdomain of their site, in which case you use Weebly simply as a site builder. This does require a degree of technical knowledge on your part, and you might have to get your hosting company to make a few tweaks, but that's not hard! You can also use Wordpress in the same way with your own domain. Of course you could engage someone to help you make a simple site on your domain with Weebly or Wordpress, and it wouldn't need to cost you as much as a "real" website designer or developer.

Another Wix user here. I used Wix to make a website for my sister. She started a catering/party planner business. It was easy to use and had a lot of options.

My only complaint was the domain name. Like others have said, it looks more professional if your domain name does have wix.com/ before the name. :)

Definitely great for a free site.

Thanks for sharing this as I am not aware or even familiar with wix.com as a free website provider.
I have tried using blogspot and wordpress before to create some blogs that I used to enjoy doing. It will be a good thing to learn new sites like this with nice look and for free.

Thanks for the heads up. My husband is a Graphic Designer, but is not a web designer. Where we are, he's always being asked to design basic websites, and he's always on the lookout for something to help him in providing such a service. Of course he's very transparent about how far his skills go, and the people he deals with are are just happy to have a website. Obviously, he still has to jazz it up and tailor make it to each client's specific needs.

Tumblr is another free option. It is a very popular site and there is an option to use your own domain name. There are also a lot of free themes available including some really nice portfolio themes for artists and photographers. There are some drawback to the site though. Anyone can reblog your posts which is both good and bad. The bad side is that, if you include text underneath, some people delete that text. So, for an artist who links to their site or even just types the title and their name under their photo, having someone remove that text is not nice.

I've not tried it but you can host your own site on blogger. I have seen the options and basically you change the name over and adjust the settings.

Personally I buy a domain and forward it to my wordpress blog, it's cheaper and it looks good too. This way it enables me to move any sites or web pages and as wordpress is free it doesn't cost me. I just got out of a 2 year hosting package which I didn't use as the company I set up with a friend didn't take off and because I used their templates I will lose the site.

The idea is I still keep wordpress, but if I had another site I can forward the domain to that instead, but still keep the free site with the material on it as a back up.

I like weebly's website build options, especially with your own domain name, which you would have to buy.

SquareSpace, Web.com, or Simple Site are also good options.  They require some basic tech comfort level but the interfaces are pretty intuitive.  The fees are low.

A wordpress.com with your own domain name or a wordpress install on your own hosted site is also very simple and powerful.  Though, again, a domain name or hosted site would cost a little.

As another person mentioned, as a buyer, I am suspicious of and not really willing to trust a site that is OBVIOUSLY on a free site.  If the site builder is running ads, even for itself, I'm very likely to click away.  I just don't feel like they take it very seriously as a business if they're not willing to have that startup cost.

Storeenvy.com is a good site for businesses and at-home sellers to sell their products. I'm not sure if Storeenvy takes any of your revenue, though. You receive your own link, and can buy the domain if you wish.  :)

There's a credit card processing fee thru PayPal or Swipe, whichever one is used.  If an item sells thru the Storenvy marketplace, they charge 10% commission.

Why not try Blogger or WordPress? They are absolutely free and pretty popular. I also suggest promoting your business through Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Tumblr would also be a good option.

Anything free for me is enough I just have to deal with promoting the site to make it known and attract people to visit and generate a good traffic. Sometimes free is not always good you see quality does not come cheap so better be prepared to spend just a few dollars for your domain name and hosting.

I have not heard of Wix website before, but I have seen Webly around the net. I always use Blogger and Wordpress, then buy my own domain name for my website if I want to be serious about making money. When advertisers or buyers looking at your website, the domain name does give them that sense of being a professional business person.
