It all really depends on your type of business, I guess. I'm looking to build an online and offline business so certain marketing techniques are probably more relevant than others for me at the moment. Hence networking and spreading the word that way is a useful approach for me, as is blogging.

Interesting thread.  I am a small business owner so I'm constantly looking for ways to promote my business.  I too have been using Facebook and Instagram but I get nothing out of them.  My question is: What is email marketing and how does one use forums to advertise?  I'm basically looking for effective advertising at a small price.  My funds are very limited.

I create a facebook page about the product or service if people naturally finds the page then good. I utilize my friends to spread the word online and my last option is to take advantage of the package on facebook to promote your post or page for a certain amount.

I personally use Instagram to advertise my business, whcih ensures that I am able to get free marketing as well.

In addition to that you can also think about using seo, which I have used in the past as well. Once you are ranked, it is a continuous stream of traffic which ensures that you are able to get constant customers as well.

Personally till now I have only used these 2 methods of promoting my business.

I used to work for an advertising company which offered below the line advertising media such as truck ads, lamp post ads, human ads, and even traditional ads like billboards. The company now has a sister company which offers digital media marketing/advertising. Advertising, in whatever form, is important for businesses. Most businesses will spend more on advertising when the business climate is down. Advertising your business is necessary even if your business is unique and has no known competitor. You just have to bring your brand to people's consciousness. Nowadays, there are many ways to advertise at very low costs. Social media has leveled the playing field for big and small businesses.
