5 mistakes to avoid in your online work or business
« on: October 21, 2014, 05:33:27 AM »
When you are getting started with your online business or work, you are most likely excited. You have been told that you will be your own boss, work at your own hours, make a lot of money and even drive that dream car. All these could be true but the question is: Are you ready to venture into online business? Below are some key mistakes to avoid in online business. You can also share more if you can.

1. Delivering poor quality: Plan your work and strive to always deliver the best.
2. Late deliveries: This may seem obvious but meeting deadlines should always be a priority.
3. Not getting any form of training for your work or business: Many people assume that they know everything. There are many free and paid online trainings for different types of online businesses. The more your learn, the more you get informed about your business.
4. Depending on one stream of income: Once you master your skill, go ahead and learn another one to add to your portfolio. Have at least two or three sources of income online.
5. Don't assume it's an easy game: Nothing comes easy. You need to put on some effort and work hard so as to get money.

These two are definitely right and all those who like to earn money online should know or be aware of. It is important that you can do various tasks online and not just one thing.  It is not easy cause you need to compete to lots of online workers or keep yourself motivated as always as possible.

Yeah these are good tips. This kind of stuff is more like a learn as you go. I think if people say they have gotten paid on sites. It is good to make sure that what you choose suits you. Try not to get discouraged and just keep trying.

Fantastic stuff, thanks for posting! I was actually thinking along these lines for my 2015 strategy as I'm looking to grow my online portfolio.

If you don't mind me asking, do you know off the top of your head of any websites that offer free training? Of course I'll also poke around and see what I can find :)

These are good tips.

Another one I would add is to treat it like it's a real job.  It is real, just not in a cubical somewhere.  You can be flexible about what hours you work, changing them from day to day around other things but schedule them somehow with yourself or make some sort of plan about how much work to complete per day or what hours to work and keep that commitment.  That means not letting other things intrude on 'work' and also not self-sabotaging or letting yourself get distracted with facebook during work times.

I think the biggest thing that a lot of people assume (myself included) is that working online is super easy. It's a ton of work! I mean I work full days a lot of the time, constantly trying to make money online, and a lot of the time it just doesn't work out to be as much as I would like it to be. You work your butt off to make a very small amount of money. It's discouraging sometimes, but I know it's all I have.

This is a really great post that all newbies should read. I try and plan my day ahead to do my best work. "Depending On One Stream Of Income" Is very important. Never depend on 1 stream. I try to do various things for I don't end up losing money then having nowhere to turn.

I think these are all good tips but the one below is VITAL to online work.  Depending on one stream of income could mean you're really screwed if it goes out of business or if you just can't do that one anymore for whatever reason.  Some of the gig sites are inherently fickle - lots of orders one week and none the next.  Others have varying amounts of work available for other reasons.

This is one of the most important points of all. Sites can close down with no prior notice, leaving you without an income stream so it makes sense to develop a few sources and regularly look for more to try.

Thank you for those tips. Very relevant and helpful. I also want to add this one, "Don't procrastinate." Usually, since freelancers are working at their own pace and they plot their own schedule, sometimes, they would tend to put off the work, and they would procrastinate. As much as possible, they should find ways to be more productive. Just because you don't have a demanding boss to deal with doesn't mean you can now already slack off.

Never think it is easy to make money online! Never depends on one income stream! These two are the most important to keep in mind.

Many think that making money online is easy, but it is not. We work three (four) times the amount of hours compare to outside the home job, and we get paid (if we get paid) only one percent of what real job paid. Online jobs are like gambling and risky! Sometimes it is good, but most time is not!

Thanks, that's a really great list for both newcomers and even the more seasoned professionals out there. Putting forward quality work and sticking to deadlines is absolutely important. But not ever relying on just one source of income is equally important. Especially when trying to earn on the internet, there's plenty of opportunities but there are simply no guarantees that work won't dry up.

When you have a job that relies on recommendations, like online work much of the time, delivering poor or late work is one of the worst things that you can possibly do. I always make sure that I get everything done on time, and that clients are more than happy before I invoice them for the work that they have asked for. This means that I never have any negative reviews, as I deal with everything in the stage before that. My online work profiles are full of great feedback, and that is something that I am very proud of.

Some useful tips there. And in many ways you can apply them to offline conditions as well, whether that's working for a company or working for yourself. If you invest in yourself and respect your work, you shouldn't go too far wrong.
