I like mturk it is way better than clickworker, the only thing that is getting on my nerves is the problems I keep having with my payments account. They keep saying the info I submitted is not matching up with the IRS, it is definitely not my fault the info I submitted is correct. Other than that if you don't know that you should not expect to make serious money doing this now you know. You can make some pocket change. If you do a lot of hits correctly you may be able to pay a bill.

Which transcription tasks do you recommend?  I have been having so much trouble finding ones that make sense and I can actually do successfully.

The companies that I do HITs for on Mturk are Crowdsurf, and Claritrans. The audio is going to be a crapshoot as to whether it is good quality or not, but that is true for any transcription company you work for whether it is on Mturk or not. You just have to develop an ear for it and that comes with practice.

Hi. So Geminigal, if you are still a newbie in transcription, do you get penalized if you don't get the transcript right? Like what's the worst thing that can happen to you? How do you even go about practising it when it's already something that you have to perfect because it's a job? Is there a free training site for transcription work? Or do you get a leeway for being new? How much does a transcription work pay? Thanks!  :)

Whether it's on Mturk or anywhere else, you are going to have to pass a test first before you can even start working. I guess the worse that can happen is that they reject your HIT or maybe you won't earn the bonus for those companies that offer them. I would suggest on Mturk starting off with Crowdsurf for practice because it let's you play the audio at 1/2 speed which is very helpful if you are just starting out. Also, keep in mind that each company will have their own guidelines so you will have to be careful about that because they can be VERY different from one company to another.

I like mTurk but I agree that it's not going to add up to a whole lot unfortunately. It's weird though because I do hear of some people saying that they make like $50 a day and I just don't see how they do it. I think it's a great site to do on the side with the other stuff that I do but it takes me so long to find good hits that are actually worth doing that it just doesn't seem to pay off in the end for me, which does tend to get frustrating sometimes but I stick with it.

I like mturk but I keep having problems with my payment account. I don't know why because all my info is correct. They'll send me an email saying my payments account has been verified and it is in good standing. Then when I accept a hit it will say my account is still pending. This is so annoying because it keeps happening, If this keeps happening I'm going to cancel my account.

I'm sorry to hear that you're having such a problem there. I'm not sure what's causing that but I can understand how annoying it is. It doesn't help that mTurk/Amazon doesn't offer any technical support or help so that you can get your issue resolved. I guess I'm blessed to have been there for so many years that my account is easy to use, like nothing anymore. I do know some people who claim to be making $20/day there but I just don't see how. I asked one of them for some tips and if I hear back, I'll be sure to share them here with you all :)

How much you make on Mturk depends on how many approved tasks you have based on how many not approved, as you work more you get a higher level where people will want you. These sorts of tasks will then earn you more money in the future, I personally have not made more than a couple cents per task. I may give it another shot though to eventually be able to say, hey I make more money on Mturk now. I have heard of many people who do really decent on Mturk, so I think it is possible and you just have to really work at it.

I wish I could answer this but Amazon doesn't accept people from my country on MTurk :(
It's sad really, I always see people bragging about making huge amounts of money from it...

I have no problem with mTurk when it comes to payment. The pay varies but unless you do transcription work don't expect to make more than a couple hundred dollars. A lot of the surveys have screening processes and will tell you that you don't qualify. And a lot of the HITs can be time consuming for little pay.

I typically do mturk tasks while I'm also doing something else like watching TV, even waiting for my turn at the plasma center (which has wifi).  When I worked corporate, I had a lot of time spent on hold and I used to mturk during that time.  I've never averaged more than $2-3 per hour if I look at the hours BUT I see it as earning a little bit of money in a time period where I would not otherwise have been earning.  Does that make sense?  It's not something I do instead of other income work.  It's something I do when I'm doing things that don't pay or stacking it with things that do pay.

I do not make a ton of money on Mturk because I do not have an entire day to devote to the site. It is one of the many sites I visit each day to make a little extra money on. I average about a dollar an hour and a little more if I can find some quick and easy surveys to do. Some of the work on there takes way too long to do for what you get paid for it.

In order to make any real money at Mturk, you have to stay away from the penny tasks or you will be spending a bunch of time making only a few pennies an hour. I do a few 5 cent tasks on there, but I mostly hunt out the surveys. They pay much better and do not take any time at all to complete.

@rosyrain

I do the same. I don't bother with any HITS under 5 cents. Even though they are quick, you will never do enough in an hour to make a buck. It's not worth it. I also search for the surveys. They are always pretty quick, and some are even fun to do.

I have done a few of the really short transcription (because I'm not really a transcriber) and those don't take too much time and will add up a little quicker then the 5 cent HITS. Plus the shorter transcriptions are usually available to all without taking the qualification tests.

Every little bit helps, right  ;)

I tried Mturk. I didn't think that it was worth it. I might try it again sometime as I still have an account there, but it seemed like a lot of the hits I wasn't qualified for. I guess that I don't like to waste my time on sites that I don't think are going to be profitable for me. I think some people who work fast might be able to do well on there.
