Costume Jewlery and Resale?
« on: January 17, 2015, 10:11:03 AM »
I've seen a lot of costume jewelery offered in bulk for good prices on auction sites, and I was thinking of opening up an online boutique and selling them? I know the quality of the jewelery isn't the best, but I would sell it for very cheap, and I'm always honest in listings. People in my area always buy costume jewelery for as much as seven dollars, and I would sell it for a lot less. I just wonder if there could be a lot of success in this? I've seen some inventory being sold in bulk for as little as twelve dollars, so even selling each item for two or three would produce profit. Has anyone tried this?

People purchase the bulk lots of jewelry online either to dig through it for a few pieces they may be able to resell or to use the jewelry pieces to make new jewelry.  I sometimes buy the lots when I see them for a good price online and they are very fun to sort through, especially if they are not loaded down with plastic bead and shell jewelry. You would have to sell your products for cheap in order to get sales.

I think you can make money by selling costume jewellery. If you can do the designing and molding, you can make good money, however, if you are hiring to do the designing and molding work, your profit margin is less. Before you start the business, find out about your potential customers.

It seems if you are going to sell everything for cheap then you are not going to make much money unless you sell quite a bit of the jewelry. Were you thinking of having other merchandise for your boutique or just the costume jewelry? You may want to do a little bit more research to see what kind of customer base you have the potential for before starting. You don't want to have a lot of product and no sales. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I read that there are certain designer names that are desired and specific pieces of costume jewelry.  Names like Monet, Trifari, Sarah Coventry just to name a few. You might get more of a profit if sold as a group than included in a bulk.

I have not done this, but your strategic is sound if you already know where to sell them. I have to devote lots of time in promoting and rework some pieces. My friend designed her own jewelries and sells them at the art shows. It takes lots of work. Good luck to you!

You could definitely try it. Buying low and selling higher to make a profit is the cornerstone of tradeing. If you can buy a lot jewelry in bulk for 12 bucks and sell just once piece for about 1-2 dollars, if you sell 7 pieces, you already made profit. Go for it.
