Looking back through some of the comments makes me realise that it wouldn't be wise for me to use my own name because nobody ever gets my surname right without my spelling it out for them, and even then they often make mistakes. That could have a significant impact if people go looking for my book and can't find it.

I use a pseudonym because:
 • My name is very common.
 • My last name starts with one of the later letters in the alphabet.  If my book were to be in a bookstore then I would be towards the end of the genre section.  No one really goes that far sometimes.
I chose a pseudonym that is not very common, is somewhat memorable, not so late in the alphabet, and fits ME as well.  It's also the one I use for a specific genre.  If I move to a different one then I'd use a different pseudonym.  I wouldn't use my real name just in case I become famous I still want to be able to go out.  ;)

I never thought about the impact of choosing a pseudonym that falls late in the alphabet. I've got one in mind for a book I'm considering writing, and the surname starts with an S. If I write the book, it's important to me to stick with it for personal reasons. Hopefully that won't be a problem.

I am all about privacy, especially online. If it was back in the days, then I would be using my real name, but when it is internet, you will never know where the information will fall in.

Unless you want public recognition, a pen name is kind of brand that you craft to make a world around it.

If your name or surname are unpronounceable, or you are aware that people tend to always write it down in the wrong name, you should consider a pen name instead; short, easy, memorable!

As a freelance writer, I have a pen name that is so nice that I got a client saying this once; "you are the most expensive in the list of my prospective writers, but I will go with you because I love how your name sounds."

The right name can serve to make the right marketing strategy as well, and you may use multiple names to cover different writing areas, unless you want to be known for your multifaceted talent.

I am considering some spoof pen names that people will know are fake just like Benjamin Franklin when he used Silence Dogood and Alice Addertongue.

You can revert back to your real name even after the book has been published and therefore enjoy the extended copyright that authors who use their real name have.

Sometimes a name has to fit the book, just as a company name has to fit what it sells and the brand.

I always loved that name: Silence Dogood.    ;D

@Gina145, the genre should be taken into consideration too.  Look for popular authors around the genre you want to write about.  For example, if you want to do romance novels, would you rather be next to Lucy Carmel or Danielle Steel?   ;)

Thanks. I'll bear that in mind. However the book I'm contemplating is non-fiction based on personal experience, so I don't think an exotic name is required. The name I want so use is one I'm already using at another site and I have my reasons for wanting to stick with it.

That's a tough one. I guess it really boils down to whether you'd want some name recognition or prefer to enjoy anonymity. You'd have to go with your gut feeling on this. At a later stage you may decide to alter your decision and choose to go in the opposite direction. The important thing is that you should write the content that you want.
