I think it's really hard to earn money with forums, just as it is with blogs. There are so many articles online that give a false impression that it's easy to make a lot of money if you own a forum, blog or even an eShop. However, things don't work out that way, it's incredibly hard to be discovered and gain enough traction. Most of the successful forums and blog owners took years to build up a significant audience, and even that doesn't stay consistent.

Most forums don't exist to make money, just because people love to have them, it's a hobby. Monetizing a forum is something hard.

The cost would be mainly the hosting costs and a domain name and then time developing it. Most people pay for servers and software, but you can get them all free. I set up a forum with a free domain, free hosting, and free forum software. Obviously there are limitations, but you can run one quite cheaply, (say under $20 a year) so that can build up a domain name rating.

Yep, the costs aren't that high so it's pretty cheap to maintain a forum just because we love it, with no profit involved.

The majority of forums don't make money, and I'm sure most forum owners are aware of that. The main goal of a forum is to build a community around a given topic. When people get together and share information, that's quite magical on it's own. A few of the more popular forums may be able to generate a bit of ad revenue, or if they've got their own products to sell such a t-shirts, mugs etc.

I thought it cost more than that to run a forum. I guess it is for the "love of the topic" more than anything else. There is a lot of information that is shared and exchanged on forums, and I think people really like that. I notice some forums do advertising to defray costs.

Pretty much, I believe that most forums out there are run because people love a certain topic, so at the end of the day they are spending money on what they love to do and not exactly trying to do any money with it.

If you know a little about coding, you can probably make your forum almost for free, and that is why there are so many that don't seem to have too many other ways of making money. I think it's great to know that forum making is actually quite accessible even if you don't have a huge amount of experience, so if you have a niche that you think people would like to talk about, you could certainly make a good forum about it and get a lot of visitors to it in the long term.

I completely agree. If you know something about coding, you could probably be up and running almost for free.

Most of the forums that I am a part of usually have some kinds of ads in them. I usually try to click in those ads although I don't buy anything. If I remember correctly, just clicking in those ads can be beneficial for the forum owners because they earn per click that they get. And as a way of helping them, I just try to click the ads whenever I visit their forums.

As far as the affordability of maintaining a forum goes, I think that is why lots of people venture into forums. It's easy to create, maintain and setup. Plus, it's a fun way to build a business as well. You only need to be passionate about your forum and build a community.

I have no experience with forum or how to run a forum. PL is the first one ever that I joined. Now, I think I have an idea why some forums don't make it after a few months, and why they disappear after a while. They probably didn't make enough money to keep them open.
