I have sold phones only, and I just place the unit inside a bubble wrap and inside a tupperware, since the courier requires a tupperware for gadgets, although the other courier accepts simple boxes. When it comes to clothes, I have received them as is in the courier pouch, no boxes needed unless it's that many.

Many people these days care about recycling, so I usually re-use my envelopes and boxes. I often receive items in recycled packaging, as well. It saves money and keeps items out of landfills, and as long as nothing has spilled on it, there should be no issue. I sometimes will state in my listings that I use recycled packaging, but sometimes I don't bother, and I've never had a complaint.
