My dream is to be a writer and ever since I heard of self publishing it has got me interested very much so. Finding the time and commitment to write something good has been hard for me though. Oh well it happens I guess. I have heard it is very hard because of promotion needing to be done. It was nice reading this thread thanks for the great info everyone.

Yes, you can make money self-publishing.  Quite a few authors started out Indy and when their work was successful got traditional publishing contracts.  Other authors, like Holly Lisle, started out traditionally published and then moved on to sell Indy work.  I think there are two main things to remember:
  • You probably won't earn money fast at first.  From what I have seen from friends who self-published on KDP, the money pretty much just trickles in slowly.  There's nothing for a while, then a few sales.  Then nothing for a bit more.  I wouldn't count on it for any specific amount of income.
  • You should plan to do a lot of promotion like a blog and twitter and a facebook page to generate interest for the book.  Write it first and then start to generate interest while you edit, format, and create the cover.  The promoting will let people learn about your writing style ahead of time, making them more likely to buy the book.  It can also give them teasers so they're eager for it to come out.
There are a lot of books and websites on the subject of self publishing and promotion but it's clear that promotion is a really important process of the self-publishing game.  Writing the book is only half of the game.  I'm fairly confident about the writing part but the promotion seems harder.
I will agree with you on this! I worked with over 100 authors as a book marketing/promotion assistant and can tell you that book marketing (unless you're already a big hit offline like Stephanie Meyer) is not a quick-profit game. Authors need to remember that:
1. As a self-published author, you are starting at the bottom of a pile of constantly growing books. Promote like you're an award-winning author, but keep learning like a newbie marketer.
2. Amazon doesn't care if you sell your books. It's up to you to make the best book you can and promote it the best way you can.

Whether we publish articles and stories on writing sites, or a book/ebook on indie publishing platforms, we can actually make money by self publishing. We may not be able to make good money like when we publish on newspaper/magazine or books with traditional publishers, however, we can of course make money by publishing short pieces online or self publishing books through indie publishing market. Since publishing is free online, it is easy to make money. However, self publishing print book may be a waste of money.

You can make money but not instantly.  It takes time to build up a following of people who will buy when you publish new work or who will verbal encourage others to buy your work.  Once you have a fan base though, you can make a living selling books.  But it takes time and hard work.  In the mean time you probably need to work another job to cover your bills.

I think as long as it is something people want to read, you can indeed make money. However, taking the time to advertise and promote is really important. It is just one of the things that you might want to use to maximize your sales. I am talking about creating a facebook page and excitement around your release. It is just one of the things that you can plan on doing if you want to make money on your book.
