Writers who self-publish and use the unlimited service or lending library will only be paid pro rata of the pages actually read.

This may push up the price of books if authors don't get paid, as not all people who download books read them straightaway. I don't see how this can benefit authors, except to line the pockets of Amazon?

It doesn't benefit authors. That is, as usual, the whole point of the change - more money for Amazon, less money for authors, hide it all under a very thick layer of BS that tries to convince the world it's "good for the consumer".

Given the quality level of some (so-called) ebooks, I can see the opposing argument - I'd be seriously annoyed if I'd paid full price for some of the crap I've seen on there, since self-pub has no enforced standards - but even so...

It's the easy way out for Amazon, instead of trying to figure out a decent refund policy based on quality, a standard to enforce or a better system than the free-for-all they encourage.

Oh yes, Amazon won't suffer but the authors definitely will, especially the shoddier the work! I have to say though, some of the work out there is just awful, sometimes I wonder how the authors managed to get it out. Maybe this will spur them on to write better.

I do forget there are some silly books that are 37 pages long and rehashed self-help advice under the guise of a book. Those who make e-books purely to make money will be affected and who does buy these books? They stick them in the unlimited scheme for that reason and hope for lots of downloads.

I can see that is will deter these people, but it may also affect writers whose books struggle to get an audience. Personally I wouldn't join either scheme as the small print has so many restrictions.

Since self-publish allows anyone to have whatever they want published, I think with this change it will keep them down in numbers if they ever read the change. Like you, I often ask myself who bought these types of nonsense (self-help, recipe, how-to), and why! If I need something, I certainly will just look it up, read it, and leave it online.

Well, as one of those horrible writers, no just kidding i would like to think my stuff isn't too bad although, like some of you I have seen some terrible stuff out there.  One of these individuals was actually selling this junk by the thousands and I wanted to know how, because it was horrible, the grammar, the punctuation, evwn the formatting.  I thought, they must of found their audience or something.  Anyway, as I was about to say earlier as a self published author on Amazon at this point I would just be grateful for someone to discover my work and read it.  Yes, maybe I would feel differently if my work started to take off and Amazon was making more money then I was for it, but at this point my e-books don't cost too much as it is, so that would been happpening regardless.

Basically it won't affect you if you price your books at the right price and don't add it to the unlimited or the library options. It may deter those who write quick books, as they got money per download, but I also think people were manipulating the system and rankings too.

I know from seeing some tasks that some pay people to download the e-books and to do a review and a search as well as adding it to a wish list. Maybe Amazon is cottoning on to the not so 'best' practices going on?

Yeah, self-published authors would suffer from this new policy of Amazon, but they don't have any choice, right? If they want to get their books be marketed around the world, they need to follow the rules unless they decided to write a novel similar to the Fifty Shades of Grey, then I think they would not have to go along with those regulations. Just saying.

Guess the abundance of low quality ebooks has created an opportunity for Amazon to exploit. It's really sad but I've encountered too many self-published books that are badly written and thin on content. Amazon has realized that many of these will never become strong sellers and has therefore started to charge on the pages read. It's probably not good for the writers but ultimately may not be good for readers either.

I really do not see how any authors can get paid this way. It seems like only Amazon is going to get the bigger cut. I do get that they realize that a lot of people are self-publishing and they want to get in on holding the platform, but they should give at least 50% to the authors considering we do all of the work.

Well Amazon's profits were down last quarter so they have to look at new ways to make money. This is why their shipping has gone from 35 dollars for free shipping to 49. They are doing everything they can to increase their profit margin, and if that is something that hurts their authors so be it. They are a business after all.

I have two books on Amazon Kindle. I have heard about this program where Amazon will pay the authors when their books are read. In order to benefit from this program, you need to be enrolled for lending library though. Amazon Kindle offers highest royalty rates in the indie publishing market. If you price your book above $2.99,you can earn upto 70 percent royalty.
