Blogs
« on: June 29, 2015, 01:02:25 PM »
So, I'm a teen and I really would love to start a blog. I love writing so I think that it would be perfect for me. I tried once, but I didn't have much success. It's hard because  I know you aren't supposed to be able to make money for a long time. I made an account with WordPress because I heard that was the best place to go if you want to start a blog. My only thing is that I don't want to buy a domain name, when I don't know if I will be able to get people to come to my page. To me, it just seems like a waste to do that. So, if anyone has any suggestions on how to get started, that would be great!

Wordpress is a good blogging platform, but I would recommend Blogger for beginners.
It's easy to design you're own blog there, just pick a layout in general and make a graphic for your banner.
To make a banner you can use GIMP (it's a free graphic programme) or either Picasa if you have it.
Also you can make a banner online, if you don't have enough time.
Now, if you have that done you will need to start to gain traffic, it's not easy though.
At first you can advertise about your new blog on social media for ex. Facebook,
also you can pay for companies to advertise your blog for you (that will need your investment),
or either you can buy real views from websites (that will also require your investment).

Many people say this and I will repeat it; you should never start a blog to try to make money from it. You should do it because you enjoy it and any revenue from ads or links is a bonus. These days it's much harder and I have made pennies from my HubPages and my blogs on Blogger nothing for months.

You can start a blog on Blogger or Wordpress for free, but these days there are so many abandoned blogs on the net.

I agree with Alex in that it really is difficult to make money from blogging. However, cash is not the only thing that can be gained.

My blog, for example, concerns making money online. I make virtually nothing through ads but I do gain a lot of referrals for the various site I use to make money. Activity from these referrals then tranlates into either cash or Amazon gift codes.

I have a friend who blogs too and she manages to get an awful lot of freebies sent her way, simply by contacting companies and promising product reviews. I probably shouldn't disclose the fact that the majority of these goods end up being sold on eBay or given away as part of a blog competition (which will increase visitors). So even though she's not making much cash as such, she is gaining things that will convert into cash.

Blogger is a little easier than Wordpress but you certainly don't need to bother buying a domain name just yet. Do have a think about what you would like this name to be though, as it can have quite an effect on page rankings.

WP.com is a terrible choice if you're thinking of money: you can't run ads there (as far as I know). Self-hosted WP is the ideal setup, but you need a domain name - I can see why you'd think it a waste, but when you can get one for $1 for the first year, it's hardly a massive investment if you're at all serious about blogging.

And if you're not serious about blogging, then you should find another way to earn, because the income from blogs is phenomenally hard to generate unless you're (a) prolific, (b) incredibly interesting or (c) famous. Oh, and lucky. Sure, HuffPost went from blog to multi-million-dollar enterprise, but the other 40 million blogs online didn't. :)

If you just want to blog for fun, any service will do. It usually takes 6-9 months for traffic to start coming in, unless you're very active with - and good at - marketing.

The worst mistake you can make while creating a blog is avoiding a dedicated and personalized domain. It'll cost about $12 for the .COM domain name, and then you can get annual hosting with cPanel for as low as $12 per year. There's no reason you should stick to some domain extension from WordPress or Blogger because that's going to reduce your blog's visibility and credibility immediately. Once you have your own domain, even on WordPress, you can do ads of whatever you want. It's yours.

Since you are still a newbie in the blogging world, I suggest to just try and test the waters first and go for free blogging platforms such as WordPress and Blogger. When I started blogging, I utilized Blogger and I would say, it's pretty easy to navigate. You can now also link your Blogger account to your Google AdSense account so you can be able to monetize it. Best of luck! :)

I think you should work out how you plan to monetize your blog when thinking about what platform to use. If it's purely about ads then you've got to work out which ones allow them. If it's just for fun (or even just to test it out), I would think about using Blogger. It's incredibly easy to use. As for making money out of it, I'm the last one to ask as I haven't had much success from previous efforts...

I have heard some good things about blogger from someone who is currently using it.  I am not too fond of Wordpress myself.  To me its just not too user friendly in its layout.  That is just my opinion on it.  Also, figure what you want to blog to be about.  Then figure out if there is a market for it.  In other words is this a subject people would flock to read about.  After all, the key to having a blog is the get individuals to read it.  Then there will come promotion.  Now social media platforms can be great for this.  You can go to your friends and followers, and can even look for places in this platforms where the subject of your blog would be welcomed as well.

Blogging can be great, but you have to make sure that you're going to be able to get the readers that you need, otherwise you're never going to be able to make any money out of it at all. You have to make sure that your posts are well researched, written and thought out, and that you post regularly - but not too much. Only that way will you get people to subscribe, and that might help you to make the money that you need. Blogging can be difficult to make money out of, but if you manage to find a good niche, there is no reason that you shouldn't be able to do it.

I've also heard this over and over again, on many forums. People always seems to advise to write from the heart about something you have a passion for, and not focus so much on making money overnight. They seem to believe that blogging is a slow burner and chances are it may not take off straight away, if at all. I too wanted to try, but for now, I think I'll hang fire and try in the future. I think it's something you can do better and sustain it  for longer if you're not in desperate need of money.

It is good that you had started something. You decide later on whether to buy a domain and pay for your hosting. As you had said you are still on your teens there is a lot to learn and write about. Continue with your WP blog this will be your training ground for who knows what you might turn it into in the future.

Blogging is good for teens and making money, start a blog on something with your life. School, what it is like being a teenager. Give useful hair tips, makeup or anything else that comes to mind, you can also made videos and add them to your blog. Blogger is good for starting out, and then if you have your parents permission you can use things like Google Adsense to help you earn money. I believe you can earn off of that if you are under 18 with their permission anyways, don't quote me if I'm wrong. Please read all of the rules for them and well good luck, I hope you can actually earn something from blogging. Now later on down the road, you will want to pay for a domain name, it will get you more traffic, users and people who will interact with you.

Blogging is something hat you have to work out for a while in order to get it to work. If you do a sort of review type site then it may be easier to get some attention with in regards to getting freebies. You can even grow the popularity by doing giveaways which draws attention. Just put in the work and do some decent SEO and you should be good.
