Does anybody have good luck selling on eBay?
« on: August 03, 2015, 04:56:01 PM »
A few years back, I listed and sold quite a few things on eBay. I seemed to have pretty good luck and it was a good way to make a few extra bucks. I stopped because shipping became so costly. Since I didn't have a 'business' or mass quantities of merchandise, I couldn't afford free shipping like many offer.

Does anybody sell just to make a few extra bucks? And, if you do, how do you figure shipping? Do you charge 'shipping & handling' so it will include the price of packaging, or just the exact postage to ship? I never buy anything on eBay if the shipping cost is outrageous (or more then the actual item), but how do you figure it fairly for you and the buyer?

I would like to get back to selling some items, but to be honest, I know they won't sell if the shipping it too high.

I had not sold anything on eBay for a long time either and just recently posted a few items I no longer wanted. I usually do the auto calculation when it comes to shipping costs. Shipping is added based on where the bidder lives. It is helpful and I normally do not pay more than that cost. I would never offer free shipping unless the item was expensive and small because you lose a lot of money doing that.

I do sell from time to time but it really frustrates me - the system is completely geared for the buyers protection rather than the seller.

Also, eBay raised their fees so much and they also take a percentage of not only your sale amount now, but the amount of shipping you charge. Quite honestly the juice isn't worth the squeeze with eBay that much anymore.

I bought lots of things from eBay, but not selling! I don't like the idea that eBay always assumed that the buyers are right and gave them full rights while the sellers are at a loss. I like being a buyer more :)

If you sell at Ebay.com then for sure you will get charged with fees. I live in the Philippines, so I use Ebay.ph, and when I tried to list my item there there was no charge at all. So I think the fees are for larger target countries like Ebay UK and Ebay US. I don't use Paypal and I opted for a bank deposit payment method so that I won't have to deal with the hassle of a dispute, so I think by using other payment methods you can dodge the Paypal fees.

I have never tried selling nor buying items using eBay before so I haven't had any first hand experience with it yet, but I know some people who utilize this marketplace site and I have been hearing positive/good reviews about it. If you really want to get a lot of customers, I think one thing that would spark their interest is that if you will lower your prices specially the shipping fee.

I've tried selling on eBay plenty of times before, but nothing I've posted has ever actually sold aside from used video games that I was no longer playing. I think the site is good for making some extra bucks off of when you have something you no longer need or use, but actually making a business of it is pretty difficult for the average person if you aren't able to develop something yourself. Someone I follow on deviantArt has made a career out of selling her homemade stuffed & poseable animal toys. That's a case of selling your own goods though, so if you're selling something you already own you're really just making back a little bit of what you spent originally unless its a collectible that gained value.

The times I did sell games on there though, I added the shipping cost to the cost of the item itself. A lot of people are more attracted to items labelled as being free shipping, and some even mark their searches as only showing listings that have free shipping without checking anything else, so that worked best for me.

I don't know about now, but eBay used to be good to me. I used to buy and sell clothes, while my husband would sell vintage football shirts. For a while we really did well for ourselves, but then eBay started charging all these fees that meant it was no longer worth our time and effort. So we stopped. That was a few years ago, I don't know what the situation is now.

That's interesting that the fees vary from country to country! Where I live paypal is actually required to be listed as one of the payment methods on eBay, so you don't get a choice as to how buyers pay. I'd much prefer direct bank deposit each time so that paypal weren't taking their cut of the funds too...
