Writing, writing, and more writing
« on: August 11, 2015, 03:54:31 PM »
I have been slowly but surely writing article to add to my inventory, but it feels like I am selling out as soon as I can get them posted. It is a great predicament to be in, but I wish I had more time to write so I can sell even more. Has anyone had this happen before? Where did you find the time to write more?

It is great that you're able to sell your content as soon as you have written it, as this is the way that you will make the most money in the long term. Are you happy with the rate that you're getting for your writing? If you are, then maybe it is worth putting a little more time into it, as it is clearly something that you enjoy to do. I am similar in that I have plenty of writing to do and not enough hours in the day, so I just have to accept the fact that I can't do as much as I might like. But I am still earning a good wage from the work that I do manage to complete, so it isn't all bad!

It's good to hear you're doing so well @Rosyrain.

The only thing I could suggest is looking at ways you can free up more time in the day. Would getting up earlier or staying up later help? Is there anyone else at home who you could designate household tasks to?

I don't know if you batch-cook at all but doing this can really help you "bank" time later on in the week. Whatever you do though, make sure you don't burn out!

Writing assignments/tasks could really be overwhelming at times, specially if you have got tons to do and accomplish within the day/week. You really don't know where to begin and it sometimes ruin everything when you get panicky or paranoid. I think the best thing to do is to plot a schedule that would totally work for you. I believe time management is the key for you to write more. Best of luck! :)

Potential available times: Could you wake up a little earlier and write one first thing in the day? Could you skip an episode of a TV show to write more? I'm not sure about your personal situation but maybe your kids/spouse could help out more with chores to give you writing time? Or maybe you could get a young teen mother's helper to play games with your young children in the living room while you write somewhere else? Depending on your rate per article and the rate the for the mother's helper, you could still end up profiting.

I personally took a close look at my writing process itself. How much time was I spending picking a client and topic to write for (on blogmutt but it could apply to other places)? How much time was I spending on research? How much time did I spend actually writing? How much time on proofreading? Then I experimented with reducing my selection time and research time while still keeping the article quality at the same level. I was really wasting a lot of time on those parts of the process that I could have been writing instead.

I sometimes feel I will go blind with all the writing I do. I spend a lot of time on the computer and my eyes go bleary. There is a lot of writing that can be done online. Unfortunately, not all of it is quality material, nor does it pay a lot. You have to look carefully for good assignments, and those that are not extremely difficult to do.

I am so glad for you @Rosyrain that your writing has been going well! That is a huge feast that you are selling as soon as you posted. I guess you have to figure out what time of day or night that are most productive in doing your writing, then just concentrate on that. You might have to give up some other activities and get your writing in first, depending on what you love to do more :)

I have only ever written for all those rubbish sites that folded one after the other i.e Elite Visitors, Linker Zone and CGP Gallery. It was the sort of writing you could do with your eyes shut, and I never got to cash out before they went under. So I haven't had any good writing experience. I'm a little in awe of you and just want to say kudos to you for your success in this area. If my articles sold at that rate, I'd scale back on some of my lesser paying online jobs and channel more energy into writing, that's for sure.

I have been having to give up a lot of the survey work I used to do in order to concentrate on writing. I did not mind doing this in the least because I do not like taking so many surveys. Writing expresses my creativity and I such more enjoyable.

Congratulations, @RosyRain! That's great to hear. I know many would love to be in that predicament, but I know you've been very busy lately. I agree, it's best to be very organized when you're in that situation, so if there's a time when you're alone, and won't be disturbed, it would be good to plan to set that aside for writing. Distractions and stress are what kills my creativity, so I have to knock out the boring chores before I can do any designing. I'm happy to hear that things are going well for you.

Writing consistently is not always an easy to achieve task, so congrats for being doing it this way.

Sometimes I have tried to go with my writing the same way, but I'm usually having time constrains that do not only prevent me from writing a series of articles in a row, but also to write at least a few sample that oftentimes are required to apply for a writing gig or potential stand-alone project.

Perhaps a change of scenery.  The best places for me to get a lot of work done is at the coffee shop or library.  When I'm at the coffee shop, I have to have my headphones on to tune out the noise.  The libraries in my area go through changes.  Some are very quiet but others are not.  When I'm out I sometimes bring my own mobile broadband because the public wi-fi can be slow (and unsafe).

Well sometimes, I wish I could write faster. I am pretty good at churning out articles, but I could make more money if I could do it faster. Of course, the faster you write,,,usually the more the quality goes down so that is a drawback. It seems like most sites do not appreciate online writers much at all because of the wages they pay. It is a shame really.

That sounds like a very good predicament to be in. Out of curiosity, where are you selling your articles? I guess the issue is whether you are putting a lot of time in for sites that aren't actually paying you much in return for your efforts. I'm guessing the ideal would be to write less but for higher returns per article.

I agree with you, writing is so much more enjoyable and I feel more alive than taking stupid surveys. They always asked for the same thing, age, where you live, female or male, zip code, income, etc..I hate those the most. Why don't they just asked us what they wanted to know already? Such a waste of time.
