Writing Competitions - HOw do you feel?
« on: September 11, 2015, 06:48:20 AM »

Obviously I prefer those that don't have a fee but I also understand why some have a fee.  I mean, I'm thinking it all goes into a pot and part of the pot goes to the winner(s).  But sometimes those fees are hefty!  $20?  It also really sucks when it comes from a company that is very popular.  I feel that they already have income coming in...a lot of it...yet they want more.   It bums me out.  Don't misunderstand.  I'm "business-y".  I have my small "company" and if I run a contest then yes I'm going to have an entrance fee.  (Maybe $5 but probably not $20).  This is again because it's a small "company"  (see how company is in quotes?  lol)  But if I were a huge company with magazine subscribers and web subscribers and do paid workshops and classes...idk...I guess money always wants more money.  :-\

I feel the same as you! I write because I love to write, and I don't want to spend my money just to write. It is also the fact that different judges like different styles of writing, not to mention their moods when they read a certain piece. I don't think writing competition is for me.

I've not entered any with a fee, but those who ask for a fee which then covers a years subscription I see as supporting the magazine.

I think contests should be that, and not determined by a reading fee. If the prize was substantial I can see that it would be an investment, but when the prizes are small, I think you are better off submitting it to somewhere with some prestige. Ultimately it may just boil down to who can afford to enter rather than quality.

I don't think I would enter a competition that charges a fee - in my head that's like joining a site to earn money but being asked to pay for it first.

And even if you pay your fee and sign on the dotted line there's no guarantee that you're going to win anything. The word "competition" certainly will attract some people but I think the concept is simply a very good marketing tool in some cases.

If it's a paid competition, you won't see me enter it. For me it's just not worth throwing that money down the proverbial drain if there's little to no chance of me actually winning.

I sound like a bit of a downer, I know - but I'm sure a ton of people enter these things and I know that my chances would be small.

I've yet to enter a writing competition, but if I were to join one, I too wouldn't be happy to pay a fee of any amount! I've never even heard of this sort of thing happening. Like kim1984, this wouldn't be for me at all, I'd have to let it go :(

I actually haven't tried joining writing competitions before. But yeah, we share the same sentiments regarding those paid ones. I also love to write and it would be really awesome if I can get paid by sharing my ideas. However, I won't ever shell out money on something I am not sure about.

I've only ever taken part in a writing competition when I was still in school. I remember that my essay was published in the local newspaper, which made my parents so proud in me. My work schedule is so tight nowadays, and I do a lot of writing for paying clients, that I just don't have time to take part in any competitions.

I would not enter any competition I had to pay money. I simply don't have the disposable income to spend on things like that. I mean whatever prize money you might win would have to be deducted from the money you paid to enter the competition. No, Thank you. I would barely enter a free competition.

If it was just a fee for the contest, I might pay a small fee, like under $5 for a contest with a high prize. I would think of it as a gamble though and not "bet" more than I was willing to lose with a smile. I have entered other competitions though where those competing had to be a member or subscriber to the magazine or site. In those cases, I decided if I wanted the subscription on its own merits and whether I was willing to pay that price.

I've never payed for taking a part of a writing competition. It's ridiculous to even think that writer need to pay so they can submit their work - it's insane! You do writing because you love it and want other people to read that too. Writer is not supposed to pay for someone to read their pieces, especially if it's just a competition that doesn't even give you that good money.

I don't like to submit to writing competitions because I'm always afraid that the judges might steal my work. I did write for a Disney competition when I was a kid and then they ended up using some of my ideas, but I waived my rights so I couldn't even sue.

I'd forgotten that some competitions require that. If I really believed in something I'd written I might be prepared to pay a small entry fee, but I'd never enter a competition that required me to waive all rights to my own work.

I haven't waived my rights, but the judges stole my work. They slightly changed it and claimed that it was different from my submission. So I'll never again submit my work to a competition. It is just too risky. I'd rather have full control over my work than to see someone else make it the wrong way.

The competitions I have entered with a fee (not just writing, other things too), have usually been with non-profit organizations. It goes something like: Pay $5-15 to enter. The top 3 chosen get a portion of the proceeds (and it seems a fair number enter because last time I got a second place, I got $100) and the rest goes to the non-profit. In those cases, it's easy to consider the fee a donation to the organization. That said, as I mentioned above, I don't bet more than I can afford to lose. I don't see it any differently than spending that money on raffle tickets or playing the lottery. I'm suspicious of large fees though or unknown organizations.
