I have 3 teens and need to put them to work!
« on: October 14, 2015, 04:47:26 PM »
I have three very intelligent teenagers (17, 15, and 13) that need to either find outside jobs or work at home, because I am having a hard time supporting them financially. I am also a single mom. I have 5 children in all, and I was thinking about motivating them to make some money for themselves. They are fully capable of paying for their own phones and saving up for their own cars. Any ideas?

Well nothing was handed to me growing up. I had to do chores and save my money if there was something I wanted. I did a lot of chores since we lived on a farm. I didn't actually have a real job though until I graduated. Fast food and corner stores seem to always have openings for students to do part time and even some big stores sometimes. Online I am not sure what kids could do. Maybe some surveys and reward sites like Swagbucks.

My first thought is that the 17 year old could pick up a few hours after school as a grocery store bagger or the like, if transportation isn't an issue.  Then there's always the lawn mowing / snow shoveling route, and all three of them should be able to contribute to that.

At home, they should be able to do their own laundry and help with the dishes, which might free you up for other things.  These are just the ideas off the top of my head, perhaps you've already thought of them.  But the older they get, the more responsibility they should be able to handle - and it's really to their benefit too, so they'll be prepared for life on their own in the next few years. :)

I'd recommend real world activities, rather than online ones, simply for the safety aspect. Although there are issues in the real world too, there are just too many ways for predators to get at and dupe teens online, and they're usually not the best judges of what information to give out or withhold, especially if they're trying to please a potential boss.

What I'm seeing a lot of in my area is people asking if anyone has kids/teens who are available to do things such as lawn care, pet sitting or walking, and also pressure washing of homes. There's also always car washing. When I was young, I made a little money walking neighborhood children to/from school or the bus stops. With Christmas coming, there are other things as well, such as helping put up exterior decorations, and wrapping gifts. Most of these can be done within your neighborhood or area, assuming your neighbors need these types of chores done, and can afford to pay the kids. Otherwise, if there's a neighborhood store, they could seek employment there, and even if no traditional jobs are available, if there are gas pumps, they could offer to pump gas as a bonus for customers, carry purchases out to vehicles, sweep or hose down the parking lot, etc.

As far as motivating them to work, with my teen, I just drew the same line in the sand that my mother did - "I can't afford that and if you want to do it/buy it, you'll need to earn/save the money for it." I'm strict about it; no amount of asking changes my mind. The extended family like grandparents and great-grandparents know that if they want to give her money other than birthday gifts, they HAVE to make her earn it somehow and they do.

My daughter is 14. I meet her NEEDS...but she only needs sneakers and riding boots, not 15 pairs of assorted brand name shoes. She doesn't need to be on the (very expensive) cheer squad. I make sure she has a cell phone because that benefits me but she doesn't need a high end smart phone (which she bought herself). She wants things often that I can't afford (or simply won't spend money on). With some things, she learned to live without them. With other things, she wanted them badly enough to work for them. She also knows that she won't drive until she can pay her own insurance.

Some things she does:
mTurk - I think they 'require' people to be 18 but there are ways to get around that. It's her only online job.

She mucks out stalls and does stable chores in exchange for her riding time and lessons.

Babysitting (she has a 5-day per week gig watching a 6-year-old from 3:45 to 5:30), tutoring (one girl her own age on her cheer squad who says my daughter explains the math better than her mom), litter box cleaning, dog walking, yard work (like raking leaves and weeding)- usually found when she's out for a bike ride and notices someone doing something and asks if they want help.

For your older kids, they could totally get entry level jobs places like grocery stores or seasonal work (i.e. cashier at a pumpkin stand or Christmas tree farm).

They could work part-time as service crew at a fast food chain. This might help them become more responsible. If they just want to work at home and look for online jobs, since they're pretty intelligent, they might want to try article websites such as Cracked and ListVerse. They may also want to try transcribing audio files/podcasts for TranscribeMe and CastingWords.

Babysitting and pet sitting would be an ideal job for teens, especially in the summer where there are no classes. Also cleaning jobs or caretaker jobs if someone is sick and needs assistance is a good option.

I have a 16 years old teenager, and in the winter, he got together with his friends and went around the neighborhood to shovel snow for a few hours. In summer, he cut the grass or rake leaves. There are things that they can do but it is a dangerous world out there. It is better for them to team up with friends and only go to safe neighborhood.

One thing that I would recommend is babysitting. This is something that I did a lot when I was younger, and earned a fair amount of money from it as well. It gave me a sense of responsibility and it was also something that I enjoyed. You can charge a little bit of money, and the best thing is that your child can even do their homework while the child they're babysitting is asleep, so school work doesn't even have to suffer because of it.

The 17 year old could definitely find some work along with the 15 year old. The youngest shouldn't be out without a major sense of direction.

From my experiences, the most common jobs for teens are cashier, bagger, babysitting, restaurant host or hostess, and waiter or waitress. For example, if they are into sports, they could work at a sports store like Sports Authority or a gym. I started working when I was fifteen in the summer. I worked as a clerical assistant at a motor company where my mom works. I has a few other jobs up to now as well. I worked as an office assistant at the college I went to, as a daycare teacher's assistant, and as a substitute teacher.

If they want to work online, they can try looking up work-from-home websites for teens. I would suggest you looking up websites with them since the internet can be full of scam websites. I also think that one of the best way to earn a good amount of money would be to sell things online. Amazon, Amazon, and Etsy are the most popular sites for selling items to earn money. Try talking to your kids about all of these options, and I'm sure something will come up.

I had several jobs as a teenager because my mother couldn't work and she was a single mother. My father was never around. I used to muck out horse stables or fields, help with milking goats and work as a cashier and stock filler in a shop. I also looked after my cousins from time to time as well.

I also used to get groceries for older relatives - I'd get given a set amount of cash and their list of things they needed and I was allowed to keep the change afterwards (whether it was 0.12 or 15). It wasn't the most lucrative of jobs obviously, but it allowed me to spend time with older relatives and helped to make sure they always had whatever they needed at home. I used to use my loyalty cards when I did that so that I'd collect extra points too, which I'd then use towards getting groceries for myself and my mother.

I also did surveys online to earn extra money too. On top of that, I used to keep an eye out for any freebies, coupons or vouchers I could get my hands on to make the money I had go further.

I'm not sure if some of those are options for you and your family, but they certainly helped us out! I hope it can help some.

They can go out and start looking for job in the local area. I'm sure that they'll be able to find some work, if they look hard enough. I know that the global economy is tough nowadays, but there's bound to be employers in your area that need help for their business. As long as your kids aren't too picky, they'll find something to cover the bills.

There are fast food places even customer service jobs are available for teens.  I would look into this quickly, befor the summer season.  This is what all young teens over the age of 16 in my opinion should have....... a j-o-b.  This is a must...good job mom!

Is there a Facebook group for your neighborhood? If not, the nextdoor platform might be a good one. People will post things they need done, or you can post that your children are available to perform tasks. I often see stay at home moms posting needing someone to run to the store (we have a corner store here that children could walk or ride their bikes to), for diapers, formula, milk, etc. They also might need someone to walk their dog, or play with it in the yard, while they're busy cooking supper or picking up kids from school. Someone here got a nasty note in her mailbox a while back about toys being strewn throughout her yard, so perhaps going around picking up items like that, which is simple enough, would be another job they could perform. There are many small tasks they could do for a little money that would pay cash.
