Social media sites dead?
« on: February 12, 2016, 01:02:35 PM »
I get the feeling sometimes that social media sites no longer work for promoting services or products. It is right in the name, SOCIAL. If you offered a service that dealt with chatting or something applicable to social then I think it would really hit hard! But people on facebook and twitter just are not looking to spend any money. I see it as a promotional opportunity for a business you already have but even when a new business pops up on facebook, no one thinks it is real.

It's a mix really, youngsters use it socially and adults use it for marketing. The problem is crossing the line to what is social and what is marketing via networks.

I only use Facebook for social networking, and occasionally it crosses over as friends help each other to promote their own causes.

I use social media for business purposes....to advertise my many blogs and sites.  I am an avid user because it has brought many interested customers.  I guess you have to be social for it to work ...in order to gain more readers/viewers.

social media sites are not dead, actually they have become more alive. However, there is a shift in the purpose of social media. Social media evolved as social interaction in a personal manner, however, these days purpose of joining social media platforms is for social interaction for business or profession.

I don't think it is dead, but I believe it is not effective either. Businesses use them and constantly asking customers to follow on Twitter, like on Facebook, and suddenly your account have all of these nonsense feeds so people got fed up. If someone wants to buy something, they will just search for it online, sometimes it is even cheaper than on the product site itself.

Social media nowadays are good for personal interaction.

Back when google released penguin and panda, and those are historical moments you should be aware of, people seemed to think that social media were going to be large indicators for search engine algorithm, mainly Google. This is when a trend began that drove business to social media. What people found out is that social media does convert, and act as a signal for stores which are both brick ad morter and online. For online businesses, social media has not been seen as a hug indicator for the algorithm. Which meals a zillion FB links does not necessarily turn into a higher ranking from google, even though it might drive traffic.

I definitely think that among people I know, Facebook has been put on the backburner when it comes to promoting business type things - a lot of business pages found that their audience of followers couldn't be reached unless they were paying advertising money to Facebook to get their posts seen in people's feeds.

I do know a lot of businesses who use Instagram now instead, and have a good following on there. I think people will just jump from place to place on social media and do what is best for their business.

I use Facebook for socializing mainly and have just recently tried to use it for marketing. I am finding that it is very slow going for me because I am not wanting to pay for the advertising on there at least not right now. I have enlisted friends to share my posts for my business on their timelines to try to draw some business. I also use Pintrest by putting my website information on the pins that are related to my business and its products. It is easy and I am on there just looking for random things anyway so I figured why not post my link on there. I have seen many others who do the same thing.

From what I read especially with affiliate marketing it is very much alive. I think you just have to look for new and exciting approaches to accomplish what you want. I also think that some things work better for different demographics. I find the young people are less into Facebook and more into Instagram and more recently snap chat. That's just my observation.

I guess it depends on what audience you have on each social media platform and what they would expect. For me, Facebook is purely for friends and family. I would never use it for promoting anything (I say that now as I know I'm probably missing a trick).

But Twitter and Google+ are aimed at building my business brands. That's where I would be promoting services.

I think that the social media thing is wearing off for sales and advertising and if someone had to come up with a new idea online it would be a million dollar concept!

I think social media is a really good platform to promote your music. Of course, there are challenges but still, how would the world be if there was no social media?

My Facebook is more my presence with family and friends but sometimes I do post sites I find. Most people are not interested. My Twitter on the other hand has like minded people so that really helps. :)

Actually I don't think it's dead. I don't know what practical results we might get by advertising on social media, but I know that there is a big reach. If it's not working something might be wrong in the process.

Very much alive and well, I use these things daily.  I have found so much success from social media sites, and yes it is true you have to be social for it to catch on.  You have to also stay consistent and make sure to post honest and post thought provoking posts about your business.  It is what you make it.
