Registration fees = Scam?
« on: March 16, 2016, 03:09:27 AM »
About a week ago I've found a survey site that promises quite a good amount of dollars per survey, though I forgot what the name of the site was. I looked at their FAQs and the testimonials, and it seems quite intriguing and promising to me so I decided to sign up to it. But upon finishing the registration it asked for a certain amount of money before I can proceed further, so I quickly abandon the site. So, if a site asked for a certain amount of fees is it a rule of thumb to just abandon the site? Or is there any exception to this?

You certainly did the right thing by abandoning the site! It smells like a scam indeed. I wouldn't pay a penny if I am to work for them. I don't think there is any exceptions on this issue. It is better to be safe than sorry later.

I totally agree. I mean, I am out there to get money, to earn money, to work and I am not interested to pay to be able to work, that makes no sense.

Like the others have already said, I'm on the train that if it looks like a rat and smells like a rat...it's probably a rat. Anything that's asking you to fork out your hard earned money for the 'privilege' of working for them doesn't sound right to me!

I don't think that any site that supposedly pays its users should need to charge a fee for registration. If the business model is working, then there shouldn't be any need for this kind of fee - so I would always be wary about any website that tries to charge you for joining. Indeed, I only ever sign up to websites that are free, and I am very careful indeed about ever parting with any kind of money on a website that I'm not sure about.

No one should pay fees, especially for doing a survey. Testimonials can be faked and the only way to look at reviews are if they are independent (not on another blog) or a forum like this where more than one independent party can verify the site. A lucky escape, but we all fall for things in the beginning without reading the very tiny print.

I did when it took $10 from my phone account for signing up to coupons and surveys. Now I never give out my real number.

I would run from sites like this as well. I do not want to pay money to join a survey site unless I know other people who have been able to make a lot of money from this site. Even then, I may not join. Most surveys you  do not always qualify for so there is no guarantee that you would be able to earn money so you may be out the money you spent on registration.

Well done! That site was definitely a scam. Nobody that is offering work of any kind, should be asking for money. Also be weary of sites which offer high remuneration for easy tasks, these are also scams.

I always keep away from any online job site that asks for registration fees. Why would anyone charge you for giving you work? Why not just take a cut from your salary instead? There's even a scam site known as outsourcer or something that sends you numerous job requests after you register but you cannot access the jobs until you buy some credits. Just another scam.

I'm very careful with sites that ask for registration fees. Although some say that it is a way of ensuring people don't misuse the site or take for ungranted the site. But I don't think so. If you want me to register, then pay me and I will register with the money you paid me. That's how I know you're genuine

To be honest, I haven't even joined any site that requires registration fees. I have encountered a few sites like this and they always look shady to me. For me, I shouldn't have to pay for a work that pays very little or even if it pays average. I mean, even in real life, you don't have to pay for fees for you to be able to work.

Another thing that bothers me with sites is that sometimes they have a fee to be able to make your account rank higher. Like with one site, in order to be able to write for supposedly higher ranking clients, you can pay the site for them to review your work and decide whether you can work for those higher clients.

I don't trust sites that have registration fees. I've always avoided them the best I could because I've never hear any single good review about those sites. I'm sticking with free sites as long as they give me some money.

I would never pay a registration fee to work online. I have been working online for almost ten years and I have never paid to get paid online. Sure there were a few paypal fees for some early sites, but now most online employers just absorb those fees themselves.

I have avoided many "high paying sites" just because they were asking money for registration.  When ever I see registration fee, I have a feeling that these sites are not genuine.

I have avoided many "high paying sites" just because they were asking money for registration.  When ever I see registration fee, I have a feeling that these sites are not genuine. Having said that some sites that ask money for premium membership actually are legitimate. For example, if you are a paid member on upwork, you will have more credits and can apply to more jobs.
