Real name or pen name?
« on: April 01, 2016, 11:27:26 PM »
Which do you prefer to use when you're writing? Your real name or a pen name?

Personally I'd prefer to use a pen name wherever possible rather than anything that can link back to me as I prefer my work to remain separate from my personal life.

I don't even like my real name so I prefer to use a pen name for everything. Never will you see me using even my nickname as a username for anonimity purposes.

I use a pen name whenever possible. Sometimes I think it's to my detriment because someone knows my 'name' for one type of work and doesn't think of me for other stuff. Other times, I think it's important that they are separate. A pen name that's posting paid blogs on kinkly probably shouldn't also be pitching to parenting magazines.

I prefer using a pen name in all my online jobs. I don't know why... I'm usually wary of anything and everything online. I just cannot dare giving out my real name for fear that other people might steal my identity. It happens in credit cards and even other crimes, I know because I've seen it in many news programs. So it's important to practice anonymity online as much as possible.

Besides, many companies and sites don't require you to use your real name anyway. Of course, they would need your PayPal account but when it comes to your username it doesn't matter if it's a pen name. With writing jobs, the same goes for me, I use a pen name for them. I cannot claim the articles as my own anyway. With my blog, I'm still contemplating if I'd reveal my real name or not.

I most the time prefer to use a pen name. It's an anonymity thing for the most part, you just never know who is looking you up online and of course that's kind of scary - so it's just more peace of mind for me when I use a pen name.

Pen name for me as well! I prefer to stay somewhat elusive if I can since I don't even like sites that ask for age or female/male sort of thing. I think those sites are evasive and usually those are the surveys.

I don't like my real name either so I always use a pen name where possible. I'm glad to see that being a reason behind it isn't as uncommon as I thought it might be!

I also like to be elusive although I'm sure it could be to my detriment that people don't think of me for other things. But I'd rather be separate personally.

Definitely pen name. I'm a bit paranoid to use my real name nowadays with how things are. Pen name gives you more confidence because of the anonymity, and basically that's what the internet's all about, anonymity. So it's better to use a pen name

I like the idea of a pen name but don't actually use one right now. And I don't write as often as I would like either so until I write more I won't be using a pen name just my own.

I'm the same as everyone else, I definitely prefer a pen name. I too like the anonymity, because that way I can  really soar and let loose, and for writing gigs; just let the writing drive me, instead of worrying about every little thing. Also, I feel like it's safer for me, or at least I feel safe within myself.

In all my online writing work I do not use my real name. It is just a nickname or we can call also a pen name. I am always careful not to give any personal information online and I am just protecting my privacy.

Sometimes I use my real name; sometimes I use my pen name. It really just depends on how I'm feeling. On Fiverr, for example, I use a pen name but on Subeta I use my real name. If I'm doing jobs online where I'm writing reviews, I use my real name for those as well. I don't think there's too many instances where I do use a pen name, honestly.

Using a real name can be dangerous.  In addition, it's sort of narcissistic.  Thirdly, you could argue that people who make opinions without using their real name are cowardly, but not always.  Anyway, I think the things I mentioned depend on the situation and the person in question.   How do you all feel about the matter?

I use my real name. However, I have also used a pen name. In my experience, writing on real name has more benefits compared to writing on pen name. People believe you when they know the writer is for real. Real name also establishes you as a brand.
