How long do you research writing gigs you accept?
« on: April 04, 2016, 12:48:26 PM »
I tend to research everything I write for at least an hour or two, unless it's something I really know well, before I begin to write. I find that by researching it thoroughly I can write more quickly and get a more polished piece in the end. How long do you like to research for each piece?

Well that is a little vague. I mean if I am writing something complicated or long I might do a lot of research. If it is something or a topic I am familiar with, I might not do much research at all. I don't think there is a hard and fast rule on research. Also, I tend to write as I am researching. I research and write as I go along. This is how I do it, but I can't speak for others.

Like @Kgord said, it really depends on how much I already know about the subject and how much I need to write. It also depends what type of writing it is. I also write as I research. That said, I have tracking software on my computer so I keep track of how much time is actually spent on research vs writing.

For something like a blogmutt post, for a client I have written for before (so I'm familiar with the industry and what the client likes), I tend to spend 10 minutes researching and 20-30 minutes writing for the 250+ word posts and 20 minutes researching, 40-50 minutes writing for the 600 word posts. If it's a new client, sometimes double the research time for the first 2-3 posts I do for them.

For something like a 3-page essay (around 750-800 words but a more scholarly writing type than a blog post), I might spend 30-40 minutes researching, 60-90 minutes on writing, and another 10-15 minutes polishing the formatting and completing the works cited page.

I don't like those types of gigs where I'm writing for someone, to someone's specifications. However, I do blog and do  some research for a lot of my articles. I too find with some articles I don't need to do much research, but with others, I may have huge interest in the subject matter, but not necessarily know enough. So it really varies.

At the very least, I tend to take 2 hours, but for some things, especially factual information; it can take me maybe a couple of days. This is especially the case with my travel blog that focuses on my country Botswana as a travel destination. I'm just so wary of telling people the world over the wrong thing. I always think I know so much about my own country, but then sometimes when I start doing my research, I find I'm also learning as I go along!

If it is a subject that I need to cross-reference, I will do my research first, and jog down what I need to do a link. Usually though, I write as I research. This way I can insert footnote or quote the site/author without having to go back and look for it. I don't often accept gig on subjects that I have no idea what it is about. For example, hardware and software on a computer are something that I avoid!

I am just getting started in the write for hire game, so I try to stick to gigs under 400 words.  Also, I try to grab stuff that would not require a ton of research, but the amount that I do would come down to money.  I simply can not justify an hours worth of research for an article that I am going to make $3.  I'm not saying that I wouldn't do it if it were absolutely needed, but this is why I try to stay away from subjects that I am not familiar.  For a 400 or less word article, I try to keep research to about fifteen minutes or less.

I research as long as it takes to make the gig as qualitative as possible. In fact, few writing gigs make me daunted. This however depends on the payment and the specifications. For this reason, I want to establish a blog in a niche where I can post my daily experiences, something which I am passionate about. I also check the acceptance rate of articles. Some sites are notorious for selecting articles due to unpredictable clients like iWriter.
