Reddit advice?
« on: May 25, 2016, 06:49:06 AM »
I've just started to try and use reddit to post links, but some subreddits seem quiet and others are full of trolls. Is it better to post and interact a little and use it more for SEO?

You can use it for both, because even if people don't reply there's a lot of viewers who end up in random subreddits by googling something.

It's better to put your links and promote yourself in busier subreddits, but not the ones that are too busy, because your post will get buried under the massive traffic.

Quiet subreddits are not necessarily useless subreddits, they just lack participation. If you yourself participate then there's more chance people will follow your lead and start a nice conversation.

It is hard to figure out who the audience is, because some people may see the links and not interact, and those who do, well, it's not always very useful.

I'm not sure about timing as you get lots of US traffic and then it goes quiet, then Asia, and then Europe. As you said it can get buried, but some subreddits are so quiet, I don't want to over post so I have to figure out which ones are best I guess.

Also, take good care when posting links on reddit, because that site is really aggressive towards people promoting their blogs and such. They can easily shadowban you, and you won`t even notice. Your link just won`t show up at all on the subreddit you posted it on.

I've experienced that too. Some subreddits seem to tolerate promoting one's blogs more than others do though and I found one that worked well for the niche I've been writing in. However I've recently started a photo blog and the link I posted to that one (in a different subreddit) never showed up.

I have noticed if you try to post more than one link, they stop you in any case. I have found one subreddit where you can promote blogs, but I think I'll just post the odd one here and there at the right time.

I don't think spending too much time there to build up a reputation is worth it.

Well, according to You are not allowed to view links. Register or Login reddit is currently the 27th most visited page in the world and the 9th most visited in the US, so trying to promote it on there is not that bad of an idea. The only problem is that some subreddits prohibit promoting your own pages and some have way too many posts as you have said, but there are plenty of them dedicated only to promotion, and there are many thematic subreddits which are not overcrowded and are great for promotion because you would be promoting your page to your target audience.

I've been promoting all my new posts for my bonsai blog at Reddit for several months. I haven't exactly been spamming the subreddit with links though as I don't write a new post every day. In fact I haven't written a new post for about a month now, but that's because of uncertainty regarding the future of BlogJob (discussed in other threads here).

Has it been worth it? Definitely. A large proportion of my views have come from Reddit. In the process I've also discovered a subreddit that I really enjoy visiting.

That's good to know. I'm not going to stop posting there, but maybe more strategically so not on weekends or at midnight. I haven't found any subbreddits I enjoy that much either. It's an avenue, but one that can help with SEO I hope.

Reddit is a labyrinth where you really need to know what you're selling and who your audience is to know where to post.  I would try posting a mixture of advertising posts and some that are more casual so people will feel like you're not only there to sell, even if you are.  It's a social site, so you should interact with followers and people who are curios.  But you should starve the trolls unless you know how to turn that into good sells.  I don't have the skill set so I avoid trolls unless I'm bored and I'm on my personal account.

I totally agree that Reddit is a labyrinth! I'm not exactly all that active there, but when I do go on, it's seems a little daunting and just so cluttered. I honestly can't navigate my way around there. But @Gina145, I'm glad to hear it's working in your favour, and that you're receiving quite a bit of traffic for your posts on there. I'm still trying to understand how that site works, and how to benefit from it. I only really go on there to search for online work leads, and I always come away feeling like I've not learnt anything new. Yet so many others laud the site as this place where everything happens. I don't know if I'm looking in all the wrong places or what, but everything seems stale and dated to me LOL Good luck on there, @Alex :)

I haven't been on reddit for ages now, and I don't really miss it. I think the demographic is so hit and miss and you have to be online at the same time otherwise it's not worthwhile as your posts won't be seen.

Perhaps people are getting tired of reddit and moving to other platforms now, including Instagram and Snapchat.
