I've been producing my own jewelry for a while now, I love to work with gemstones and I'm very proud of my work. I'd like to sell some of my pieces but I think most people don't understand that we produce unique items, and only a few of them are available to pay the right price.
Nowadays cheap jewerly can be found everywhere but I work only with sterling silver components and semi-precious gemstones, and I refuse to sell my jewels for a riduculously low price. People don't understand that we pay for the raw material and that we put time and effort in creating a piece. For this reason I mainly stick with creating jewels for myself and for my family/close friends.

Yes it's unfortunate, but a lot of people will settle for cheaply made mass-produced stuff. I myself love making jewelry and always would have liked to make a business of it, but I feel the same as you. I mostly end up making stuff for my friends or family.

I do have a friend however who now makes a full time living making jewelry from home and selling it on sites like Etsy. The thing is, she has really great, unique product ideas, does mostly custom work so people understand more what goes into it, and bends over backwards with customer service. Not an easy job but she loves it and I am in delight of the things she makes!

It is true that most people don't understand. I find that with the products I make too (some of which includes earrings.)

However, I think that you can find a niche market. Even selling on sites like Etsy, you can do okay if your jewelry is unique enough to attract buyers who want that 'something different.' But the competition is, indeed, steep, and, as you point out, there is so much cheap jewelry out there that it's hard to get people to pay what yours is worth.

High end craft fairs are another alternative. I did one once that is known to attract customers with money. It was more pricey to have a stall, but it paid off because the kind of people who came were generally not afraid to open their wallets, and sometimes didn't even ask how much something was before they said they wanted it.

Nowadays in the business market industry sometimes people are often confuse because jewelries that are being offered having a higher price and a cheap price almost looks the same in quality. That is why most people prefer to buy the cheap ones. Competition is really tough and you should really make a unique design that is something new to their sight and that will attract them.

They really don't.  The materials are expensive (especially the good kind), and it takes time to design a piece, tweak the design, and put it all together.  And that doesn't include the time spent looking for materials and, in the case of stones and wood, drilling them and preparing them to be made into jewelry.  The retail stores use very cheap plastic and resin beads (I know because I've worked in these stores), and even the ones that have a fine jewelry counter usually don't sell quality pieces.  I prefer handmade jewelry because every piece is unique and you can get customized pieces.
