Mystery Shoppers
« on: June 22, 2016, 06:14:05 PM »
Does anyone else do mystery shopping? I love going out to dinner with a friend for free and getting 10-15 dollars in my pocket. In July I will be visiting certain convenience stores to buy a coffee and get paid 10 dollars every time. I just wanted to give a shout out for the website "mystery shopper association" because in the mystery shopping world there are so many scams, and this website helps you to look for legitimate mystery shopper gigs. So why not try it out?

I did mystery shopping but I didn't like the lag time between the task and my payment.

I am a bit sad as I am having no luck these days. It seems like the Canadian mystery shop places I find mostly have shops in the city and I even had one place calling me asking me to do shops in PEI which is 4 hours from me so that wasn't happening, she apologized and said she didn't know I was so far away from the shop location. Bestmark I sometimes get to shops where I call a place or web evaluation shops which I like but they are few and far between. I did find a shop on a local job board but wanted people who looked 21 and younger so I couldn't apply. From what I can see the city seems to be the best place to live for mystery shopping.

I have been wary about trying mystery shopping because is seems like a scam.  They want you to go pay for something and then reimburse you later but only if you complete certain things within their requirements or you don't get paid.  I've heard people go and not get paid for a month or so.  I don't have that kind of money to just blow on something that might pay me.  Has anyone done it successfully?  Do you actually make money doing it or do you just get part of what you paid for reimbursed, I've heard so many horror stories.

I have the same fears, cross89. I have looked into mystery shopping off and on since I first heard of it, probably more than 10 years ago, and have never felt safe about the prospect. Even with those ones that do legitimately pay, I feel the concerns of filmjunkie 08--waiting months to be paid for something you shelled out for.

I just don't' see how this can be worth it. Even with the OP's recommendation of that one particular site, I haven't even Googled it because I still feel wary.

Mystery Shopping isn't a scam. I have done it for years. I have gotten plenty of free meals, oil changes and the like. You do have to sign up with a reputable company though. You can check a mystery shopper forum available online for some of the legitimate companies to work with. MSPA is an agency to check to for legitimate companies you can use. Be careful as there are some scams out there for sure.

I have done it a couple of times and its good way to make some extra cash without having a proper schedule because In mystery my company used to just give me date range in which I had to visit the store and note the experience, so it was  a great income source for me on the side.

I haven't done this, but mystery shopping is something I'd love to do. Unfortunately it's difficult for me to get to places without having to rely on someone else to give me a lift as I don't drive and most of the places they expect me to go to aren't places I can walk to, so I've never given it a go. It sure looks like it could be worthwhile though!

I used to do mystery shopping and it is true, you have to pay upfront and then you scan in your receipts and they reimburse you later once the job has been completed, as in on their side they have filed the job.

They can deny payment for any infraction such as going at the wrong time, buying the wrong item or being spotted as the mystery shopper. It's called a failed shop and you will get zero pennies. You often get a small fee for doing it, but while $10 a shop may seem good, think of your transport costs, parking, time reading the notes, uploading the images, and writing the report which is all time sensitive. Also you will pay tax on this.

I stopped because some companies were so nit picking, and one I did like where I had restaurant visits would make me pay cash only so that there was no name to trace back. It can leave a dent paying upfront and with no guarantee when you will the money back.
