Paid to be a Book Reviewer
« on: June 22, 2016, 08:08:11 PM »
I was going through Craigslist for possible writing jobs and came across a couple of ads for book reviewing. Has anyone tried this? I love to read books, and would love to write reviews, but I don't know if this is a real thing or if I could get in trouble. Don't most reviews need to be unsolicited or something like that?

Is getting paid to review books a real job? Please, has anyone tried this and done it successfully?

I would like to take a job of book reviewer. If I am paid to write positive review, I don't see any harm on this. If you can accept payment to write an article, what's wrong in getting paid to review a book.

I have reviewed books online and offline. My reviews were unbiased. I was not asked to do the review. I have even left reviews for the books I have read on Amazon. I'm looking for book reviewer's job since a long time.

There is nothing wrong with being a book reviewer, I would get half of what you're expected  to receive before you even crack open the book.  Then write an honest review, some people might want you to write a favorable.  It's just work, unless you are a hardcore critique with a reputation, just write the review under a pseudonym if you don't quite agree with it.  I've reviewed shore stories on Fiver but I was always asked to write positive reviews so they can use it in the description.  I don't mind because I don't work for a newspaper where I'm supposed to be unbiased.

There's nothing wrong with this sort of gig. In fact, there are a fair number of legit book reviewer projects online. However, it's not so much on the question of legitimacy as it is a question of how much you'll be paid. Some book viewers who do get paid feel like it takes time to earn from such gigs. So they'd rather do something else.

There are several types of reviews and I assume on Craigslist they are paying for good reviews only, so it's like buying a good review because Amazon and place can track IPs where reviews are made.

On the other hand there are professional reviews like Kirkus where the author pays and the reviews are honest and from selected reviewers who get paid, but have a portfolio of work. Those gigs are harder to come by and consider the time to read the book and then to review it.

I've written book reviews as well as product reviews in the past and all of them had to be favorable. Some clients would sometimes require me to write out a few bad points but to make sure that the positives overwhelm the negatives. For us, of course, these are just part of the work. My name never appeared as a reviewer, so I never had problems with credibility and all.

I have not tried any craiglist jobs, thus I cannot say about book reviewer job that you found on craiglist. However, I have written many book reviews for newspapers and published many book reviews online, thus I can assure that book review is a real job. Apart from getting a free copy of the book, you also make money. If the publisher or writer is really rich, you will be earning a good money.

I am assuming this opportunity is similar to "paid to post" nothing more nothing less. The review that will look for is something constructive or positive to generate a buzz and a sale. If you are talking about the real deal then you should be someone of a very good reputation to make a book review. I know a Youtuber who does this and I know he was approached by someone to do it for a hefty pay.

I think if you manage to get a steady stream of clients then I think that it can be a permanent job. But I'm not interested in being one, since I am choosy on picking things that I should read. I guess you might try Fiverr and post a book reviewer job there if you want to become one.

Another thing I forgot to mention about being a book reviewer is that if you want to at least appear "authentic" to other readers, the ones who will read your reviews, you need to at least have an inkling about the contents of the book. You can actually tell if a reviewer is just bluffing or has really read the book.

There are not that many sites that hire book reviewers. The task itself is quite involving and I remember seeing something like you need to submit your professional qualifications to be considered. I think you can access book review opportunities from freelance sites like Freelancer and other similar sites.

I never heard about this kind of job but if you are getting this opportunity then start working it as soon as possible. Be sure about their paying system. If they pay well and on time then it is nice to work to do. Do they pay for reading E-books?

I have reviewed books for newspapers and magazines as well as online media. However, my review was voluntary. In other words no body paid me to become a reviewer, it was my own descision to review books. I received payment for the reviews I did for newspaper, however, my reviews published online got me only appreciation from the readers and the author of the books. Since I haver experience with reviewing book, I would like to work as a reviewer. However, until now I have not found a decent book reviewer job.
