What's "UP" with Upwork??
« on: June 24, 2016, 03:09:48 PM »
Is Upwork legitimate? I have heard a few good reports but also many horrible reviews. While some people claim to make a full-time income from that site, other say they work their butts off for pennies on the dollar. Have you had any experience with them? I'd like to know how it has worked for you.

Upwork is certainly a legitimate site. You've heard of ODesk, right? That's its former name. I do not know what happened but they changed names. The interface has somewhat changed too. For the most part, the mechanics for finding an online job are the same.

Yes, they're legitimate. I'm not on there, but I know other freelancers who use Upwork and they're generating some decent income. It's definitely worth a try if you want to start working online, with as little drama as possible. Nobody's getting rich from Upwork, that's for sure. But you could also access some decent gigs which may be worth your while.

As far as I know, Upwork is a legitimate site. I also have an account with them but I haven't really tried applying for any of their jobs yet. It's worth the try if you want more money on the side. You just have to choose which job would fit you. What I really like about Upwork is the availability of job listings every time I log in and look for a potential job for myself.

It's a legitimate site. I used to work on Elance and now it all merged into Upwork. I just retook the freelance work I used to do and I tried checking it out today. I noticed that they had copied all of my details from my previous profile on Elance and that they also transferred my reviews which made it awesome for me. I had been making a decent living on Elance like a year ago, but for me, the hardest part is drafting the proposals! It's not one of my natural talents! I did notice that they have a different commission set up than Elance %, so check it out before signing up. I also noticed there were more low paying jobs available than I was was used to, so I ignored those. If you have any questions, let me know!

I've just registered with Upwork as a regular member. I have not applied for any job but I've seen some available jobs that are tailor fit for my qualifications. It's certainly a legitimate site. Some people, however, may not like the idea of exposing their identity online so this may not work for them. I'm not very comfortable about having my 'resume' online so I'm taking baby steps on this one.

As others have commented, it's definitely a genuine site. I've managed to make a bit of money out of it, though hardly a retirement fund...But one problem is the fees they take. They've just jacked up the commission levels and they are pretty ludicrous in some scenarios. I'll still use it to search for clients but once I'm comfortable with the client I'll simply drop Upwork and work directly with them.

I registered for Upwork, but the last time I went to apply for a job on there, my profile came up with not a native English speaker..say what? I am American born and bred. I tried to change it, and could not easily access my profile. I am sure I could if I pursued it enough though. I do know someone who does quite well on Upwork, but I wouldn't call her income a full time income by any means.

I am with upwork since it was oDesk. However, couple of months ago my account was blocked. I was blocked because "I applied to the jobs that I did not qualify." I don't buy their charges. If I don't apply, how would I get jobs. In order to get jobs, I need to apply to the jobs as much as I can. I only applied to the jobs that I though I could do. When the upwork was oDesk, I performed many jobs and my my success rate was 80 percent and I had 4 star rating. I even got 5 star feedback for couple of jobs. I am done with upwork.

I don't understand why some of these online companies seem to want to get rid of their workers. They decide you aren't making them enough money or something, and come down like a ton of bricks on someone. I think this is very short sighted on their part. They have a captive workforce.

I never joined only because I could see it was such hard work rooting through things, and with so many people applying and pitching that's your unpaid time.

I can see why they may need to 'block' workers, but because they do it via IP or other criteria it's not really efficient. With all sites you have to build up a reputation and be in it for the long haul and not a few months or here and there.

Upwork(Odesk) is definitely a legitimate site. However, I have heard of people who haven't had any of their proposals accepted for quite a long time. Then again, I've also read that it may be because they submitted a proposal to a project that already has 20+ proposals, some people say it's very unlikely you'll get accepted at that point because they might have already picked one.

I am signed up for Upwork but haven't really used it's services yet. For a lot of the jobs posted, I don't really have the experience for yet. The review that I read about it from a professional freelancer is that it may be a good place to start but there is a lot of competition for jobs that you can easily do. The pay isn't that great but it kind of gets your foot in the door.
