What Do You Call Yourself?
« on: June 28, 2016, 06:44:04 PM »
This may seem like a weird question but...I've been working at home doing various online tasks for a while now and right now it is my job. I am blessed that so far, my bills get paid and I manage to stay busy. When people ask me what I do for a living I never know what to say lol. I do everything from web content writing to transcribing to simple click work and I work for several sites and companies. When it comes to describing your job, what do you call it?

I let people know I am a freelancer, that kind of sums up some of what I do but doesn't explain it all. I wouldn't know what else to use really but that.

That's something I struggle with too. I tell them that I do a bit of writing and photography on the internet. I guess that actually conveys the lack of confidence I feel in my earning ability online, but it's the truth. If my blog takes off, maybe I'll be able to give a more confident reply.

I tell people that I'm a freelancer and if they ask me to expand on that I tell them what things I do online, such as photography, design and writing. I find that most people don't judge me so much if I say freelancer compared with if I just list the things I do online. They see it more as a real job than they do otherwise.

Sadly I always feel I have to "explain" myself. What I do is not easily explained by the job title. Also, when they hear "I work from home" that are so many (albeit tiring) misconceptions about working from home in a W2 position that I try to avoid the discussion. For me, those discussions are like banging my head on a wall.

I do struggle with this question before when asked. People do not understand what I do for a living until I heard about the term freelancer. It is like a nice term to describe everything that I do and I do not have to explain further.

You don't really need to label yourself, but many people call themselves self-employed freelancers.

The simple fact is online work is seen as a part-time job that is casual and seasonal unless you are contracted via a company, then you would be a say a customer service agent working remotely.

I call myself a wordsmith. Once, I have been told that calling myself a wordsmith has an artificial ring to it. I beg to differ. Yes, I write but I do more than just write. I take words and hammer at them, turning them to new purposes. Just as an example, here's one which I wordsmithed quite a long time ago. I have forgotten what the context was but the phrase I used was "turgid with fertility". See? Nothing about each individual word there, but used together, they do invoke a certain image, don't they?

Most online workers tend to diversify into many different sites which might result in an identity crisis if one tries to label themselves. Its possible to be a forum porter, writer, paid to tasks etc. To that end, I refer to myself as an internet researcher and worker since I am ever looking for new online earning opportunities.

I'm an illustrator and content writer.  If I tell anyone that I just work online, everyone become dismissive.  But if I say that I freelance through known websites and then I'm legit.    As long as the other person recognizes the site, it's fine.  When people don't recognize it, then they give me skeptical looks.  It's annoying.  This is the digital age but work online is always seen as iffy.
