Can you really make money with Avon?
« on: July 26, 2016, 01:43:15 PM »
It seems like everyone I know who has ever sold Avon (or similar, such as Mary Kay), even those who have done it for years, have always ended up deciding that they are not making enough money at it to be worth the hassle. Some go so far as to say they are scams or pyramid schemes (MK is famous for being referred to as a pyramid scheme.)

So, can you really make money selling Avon? And even if you do, is it really wroth the amount of time you put in? You could probably make more doing something else in that time.

I think it's possible if you have a good network of friends or a neighborhood that is receptive, because these days people can buy online cheaply. It may be good for people who prefer to use cash or those who can't get out of the house.

However, I think since the internet too off it's been harder and also consultants can have their own online shop so they could do that as well, but it does take time and effort to build up the business.

That makes sense. I had not thought about the fact that those companies, especially Avon which I believe is older (correct me if I"m wrong), would have done a lot better in decades past when internet deals were not available.

I have been known to look on Ebay for a cheap deal on a Marky Kay lipstick I liked a sample of rather than buy it straight from a rep, so there you go.

Personally, I hate sales reps. I have a SIL who sold Pampered Chef, and it actually drove me up the wall the way she would pressure people to buy gadgets they didn't even want. But I guess that you can do it with a nice personality and not be pushy. It would certainly help. ;)

I often found people would buy for pity of they knew the rep too, because they wanted to give them some business. People are more into Arbonne these days which is over priced IMHO and so many friends approached me to be part of their network. I felt I should pity buy from them, but haven't because I couldn't afford it and I didn't feel it was right that I should feel guilty.

I agree with Alex, it can work based on how much of a social circle you have. I have always found with Avon and products like that, that it's really about the social aspect more than anything. I remember in my last job, a couple of the girls would sell Avon at the office. In the end, I seemed to buy mainly because I felt sorry for them and because everyone around me was buying. I don't actually like Avon products because I feel they're of very poor quality. I always swore I wouldn't buy, but then once the catalogue came around and everyone was placing orders, I'd be right there with them. I just wasn't capable of saying no, as silly as it sounds.

My mom also used to sell Avon when I was still a kid. Now that I'm a mom myself, Avon is still an option for women who want to make an extra source of money aside from their jobs. There's money with selling Avon products but I guess just not enough money to consider it as a main source of income.

I would class it more as network marketing these days, because people are more dubious about letting strangers into their house. As @ Lushlala says it is 'pity' buying and the same as when people sell charity raffle tickets, and you feel obliged to buy and never actually use the product and people then try to avoid the seller.

It does give false hope, and the only way I can see that it can work is in a community of people what don't have credit or debit cards, that don't go out due to lack of transport or disabilities, and those who need advice in what to buy. These days that target audience is much lower than it was in the 1970s and 80s, and perhaps it could work in rural areas, but not cities.
