If You Don't Get Paid, Stop Working!
« on: May 27, 2014, 12:04:48 PM »
That subject line may sound like a no-brainer... but I am always amazed to hear things like "I haven't been paid my last five paychecks/cash-outs, what's going on here?!"

Until it's known whether the non-paying place is a scam or if a non-payment is an honest mistake, I'd never keep working for them in the meantime.  (Well, maybe just until I'd try to find out why I wasn't paid, but that would only take a few days... I've seen people complaining about being many paychecks or months behind!)

I think people get in to a routine and stop seeing the red flags.  I stop working if two payments are missing or abnormally late, and wait until they clear until investing more of my time.

I agree that people don't follow this mindset even when it seems like common sense. I guess hoping for the best about the situation and wishing that you didn't waste the effort you put in over the whole duration is a strong motivation to continue on even without getting paid. The sooner you stop, the less disappointed you will be.

I think that there are a lot of people that won't even think about the fact that they are not getting paid. For me, I will work a site until I reach their minimum redemption point and then wait for my redemption. If I get paid I will get back to work with the site but if I don't get paid then I will abandon the site and try something else new.

It seems like people have a hard time standing up for themselves.  One thing that really bothers me, is being hired and putting in work while not knowing if the company will pay you.  I try to research the jobs and make sure people are being paid before applying.

People can get hooked on the idea of making a little extra cash online, especially if the job is kind of fun. Seeing those cents tick up can be a bit of a thrill and then people get excited about that site and don't want to pull out thinking they'll worry about actually getting their pay later. But you're definitely right. At most places you should probably cash out the second you've met the thresh hold, at least the first time, and only keep working once you've been paid. Otherwise, time to move on.

Yes... I've always done it this way, too.  I'm not much of a risk taker.   :)

There's one place where I could cash out at $5 and always wait until $15 or $20, but even that is careless. Just because they've been a strong employer so far and pay on time, etc. isn't a guarantee that they'll be there tomorrow.  I really should know better because a few places over the years *have* disappeared while I had unpaid money in my account.

Whenever I start with a new online company I do the bare minimum so I can cash out. When I put in for payment all work stops until I know that I'll get paid when they said they will pay me and that the amount is correct.

It amazes me too how some people will keep doing the work on the online site even though they have not seen their money on time or at all.  I work with some very trusted sites and always get paid promptly and in the amount that I am supposed to get.  It is like a job, if you are not getting paid to be there, are you really going to stick around and continue working...no because at that point it defeats the purpose of you being there in the first place.  If you do not get paid in the time and manner that you agreed to when you first sign up for a site, then move on to something else, there are several good money making sites out there right now.

It sucks when companies have really high thresholds for payouts and they don't pay you. By the time you've done a lot of work for them, and they decide not to pay you, you're in trouble! This has never happened to me, but I've heard that it happens to others.

It depends on what type of work you do. A lot of people do things online for money that is not really work. It just means that they have registered with a site that offers a reward to members who carry out certain activities on the site. They are not employed by that site and have no legal rights when the site is unable to pay. Even it is a scam site and deliberately withholds payments, there is little that can be done to claim any money owed by a scammer.

Working for an individual client who does not pay is quite different. If you have actually done some work on a freelance basis, you should expect payment for your efforts. The client is a thief if he or she has accepted your work and does not pay for it.

That is why I like the sites that pay weekly.  I stay away from those sites that pay just once a month.  I would hate to work for a whole month and then find out, that I am not getting paid.

Yes, you would think it is a "no-brainer". But like someone mentioned above, I think some people have a hard time saying NO. I'm the complete opposite when it comes to working for free, knowingly. I don't do it. My time is valuable.

I'll admit, sometimes it happens unknowingly when one gets involved with programs that pay after the work is finished. In this case, one is working on faith. But the minute the company starts withholding your earnings, it's a clear sign the company is non-legit and is taking you for a sucker. I don't like being a sucker. ;)

Also, don't forget to make some kind of complaint. Perhaps if it's a certain person it'll get enough attention for something to happen against them, and if it's a site you'll know to stay away from it.
